35 years later and it’s just a bigger pool filled with more fucking plastic – but she’s still got my back.
Lucky me.

I challenge you to the following today:

Count up all of the people that you are blessed with in your life that love & support you even when you are at your very worst and most batshit nutso, and tell them thank you. If you are able, also kiss them on the mouth and ply them with alcohol for putting up with your crazy ass.

Today’s thank you list: Meredith (pictured above in the bikini), my sisters, my mother, my husband, Phyllis, Marina, Jenn and Susan.

Thankful to Stay Put

The plan was for the five of us to spend the Thanksgiving break in San Francisco. My husband was already there, the girls and I were going to fly from DC and our oldest boy was flying in from Florida. We had our plane tickets; we had a dog-sitter (my saint of a mother volunteered to live here with my beasts for the extended weekend); we had all intentions of hunkering down and spending serious, quality, nitty-gritty time with one another until somebody puked. But then Lillian got sick.

It seems a bit extreme, even to me Ms. Extreme Pet Owner, to cancel one’s vacation because a pet is ill. I couldn’t help but feel a little dramatic when I called the vet and explained our situation. Should I cancel the trip? Can she miss a week of chemo? What do people do when they need to be out of town during treatment? The answer was simple. She had to be there.

Sure, I could have asked my already sainted mother to spend hours on Black Friday hanging about in Fairfax while she waited for the dog to be treated. And then there may be side effects for my already sainted other to deal with… Nah. I just couldn’t put that on her. Besides, and to be perfectly and secretly honest with you, I’d rather stay put.

To me, Thanksgiving is about your whole family. About trying to squeeze as many as you can of them inside of your house, feeding them and hoping not to smack, insult or maim more than one. It’s about holding hands, and bowing heads with generations present. That’s how I dig Thanksgiving.

I don’t (ever, ever, ever again) want both Thanksgiving and Christmas to be at my house in the same calendar year but yet being away just feels wrong. Nana, at 90, may not see another Thanksgiving. Lillian may only have this one left as well. My cousin Meredith and her family are finally living close to us (and they were so easily tricked into hosting). My sister and her new husband will be celebrating their first married Thanksgiving. As it turns out, no one wants to miss this one. With the guest list nearing 25, it is going to be the largest gathering at Thanksgiving that I can remember. (Again, extremely thankful we’re not having it at my house.)

So, my husband is flying in from San Francisco tonight. The boy comes on Wednesday. Thursday we’ll all smoosh into my cousin’s home, eat too much, possibly drink too much, probably annoy each other a bit and be grateful for every iota. And you can bet the good side of the wishbone that I’ll come home bringing Lillian a big, fat doggie bag that night.

Cheers to being here for a Happy Thanksgiving – and fill ‘er up. We’re going to need it because as much as I love my family, they do tend to drive me batshit.

Meredith @ DC Metro Moms for This Little Light

This is more than one of the most honest and compelling posts I’ve read. It is about a life-long friendship, a struggle with God and monsters and what to say to your children when you don’t even know how to tell yourself that sometimes life just isn’t fair.

Meredith writes, “Maria speaks candidly no matter what. I am simultaneously lifted by her breathtaking sincerity and gutted by the reality. Her family is up against something incomprehensibly cruel. Yet Maria exudes gratitude for how well Liam tolerates chemotherapy. Gratitude for the fundraisers in Liam’s name. For the people who offer to clean her house. For the quilts. For the prayers. For how Liam’s story has touched so many people. For the days they have with him. And for each and every one of God’s blessings along the way. Amdist it all, she does not pass up an opportunity to be thankful for someone or something.”

Friday Playdate for Please Define “Happy”

I loved this post from the get-go because it cuts right through the butter in a way that only a child can. What a powerful question Susan’s son poses to her over an ordinary bowl of cereal one morning. Are you happy?

Wow. That sounds like a simple question but if you were to answer it truthfully, as I’m sure you always strive to do with your children, what would your answer be?

Susan writes:
“I use a lot of words during the day to describe myself — busy, anxious, listening, thinking, working, stressed, interested, finished, behind — but happy is almost never on the list. To some extent, of course, this has to do with the conventions of conversation; when someone calls and says, “How are you?” it’s not really appropriate to say, “Happy!” unless you want them to think you’ve been drinking before lunch.”

I’ll let you go over and read the rest but you have to promise me one thing first. When you’ve finished, I want you to ask yourself that very question.

The End of Perfect

Back in 2006, Lindsay and I shared a wish. We wanted to create an awards program for bloggers, given by bloggers that had nothing to do with popularity or voting or prizes but more about the simple peer recognition of a post well written. After a few weeks of emailing back and forth, the Perfect Post Awards were born.

We were thrilled by the warm reaction the PPA’s received as well as the community spirit they created. As the calendar pages flipped by, our little monthly awards idea continued to gain momentum. Truly, we couldn’t have been more pleased.

But anything good has to come to an end and that’s what I am posting about today. After much discussion, Lindsay and I have decided that the Perfect Post Awards will end with 2008.

In January of 2009, we will be asking you one last time to send us your Perfect Post. This time though, we want the best post you’ve ever read. Yes, that’s right. We want you to submit the most incredible, the most personally earth-shattering post that you’ve read in your whole blogger life. And that is how we plan to conclude our little mutual dream – with a bang and amazing content.

Don’t worry! You have a few more months to participate regularly. We’ll be holding the Perfect Post Awards as usual for September, October, November and December – but come January 2009, you need to be ready with your Most Perfect Post of All Time. Deal?
