George- My Nemesis

Monday, January 31st 2005

Lillian the Great makes me smile on a daily basis. I love her more than I ever thought I would love an animal. And then there is George, the beagle. He has the opposite effect on me and most people who meet him. We got George from a breeder while we were living in CA 4 years ago. He has never really been much fun or brought any of us doggie-joy. He has annoyed our neighbors with his incessant barking, drives me and my husband crazy with his constant licking of the carpet and had lifted his leg on family members and our big screen TV. We’ve tried training, having him be an inside dog, an outside dog, taking him for more walks, bark collars, bitter apple spray…it has been endless. Neither my husband or I want to spend one more darn penny on the betterment of George- (so please don’t suggest anything that costs money). Many people (even dog-loving folks) have asked me why I put up with him. “Why don’t you just get rid of him?”, they say. Believe me I would love for George to not live with us- but what do I say to my kids? Somehow I feel like I would be sending a message to my kids that life is disposable. Am I crazy???

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!
