You School Me: Internet Etiquette

Tuesday, February 23rd 2010

1. Should you ask someone before you tag them in a picture on facebook?
I say no unless it is a compromising photo. They can always un-tag themselves, right?

2. What the hell is up with formspring? Do you have an account? If so, why?
It looks like an anonymous online slam book forum for teens to rip each other apart. I hate to be out of touch so please fill me in if there is more to it. And there has to be.

3. Are you down with the DM thanks for following me tweet?
I find it annoying as hell…but is it the polite thing to do?

What Say You?

You love me. You really love me.

  • 1. I’m not on facebook

    2. I don’t know what formspring is.

    3. I HATE AUTO DM’S.

  • 1. No permisson necessary. Tagging is just another form of sharing. No harm, no foul.

    2. No Formspring account for me. Seems kinda pointless & useless to me.

    3. I used to dole out the typical “thanks for following” mumbo-jumbo, but recently it dawned on me that it is a lot like thanking someone for eavesdropping on your conversation. And that would be just a silly thing to thank someone for.

  • 1. No.

    2. Yes, so no one can take my name.

    3. Stop. It.

  • 1. Tag me – it’s ok. That’s part of being on Facebook. BUT, I’ve been known to un-tag myself on pix that make me look like the Michelin Tire Man

    2. Formspring who? Really? Do we need another one to keep up with? Maybe I’m getting old. Sounds like a great way to destroy your self esteem.

    3. DM’s are for super personal private messages. Tell me publicly if you are grateful for a follow.

  • No permissions for tagging – some people post so many photos it would take years to ask permission and you get notified automatically when you’re tagged anyway so it’s not like its out there and you just don’t know about it.
Formspring – never heard of it. I’ll let you know more as my boys grow on the Web.
No thank yous necessary – I feel they’ve been thanked properly if I can entertain, interest, inform and intrigue them with my Tweets enough to keep them following.

  • I don’t mind if people tag me. But I love to untag.

Formspring is stupid and I wish it would stop clogging up my Twitter stream. I wish there was a way to mute it. That and the blip.fm crap too.

I hate auto DMs. I automatically unfollow.

  • Busy Mom, you, as usual, are brilliant. I could not resist following your lead…for the same reason, of course.

  • I personally don’t care when people tag me in a photo if it is me. But, when it is not me, but a poem or article or something someone wants you to read then I say, please don’t.

    DM- polite but not necessary.

    Formspring should be outlawed. Horrid!

  • 1. No. I agree that you can un-tag.

    2. I’ve heard of Formspring but am not on it yet although I might jump on over after I comment to grab my name like Busy Mom!

    3. So annoying! Just another piece of junk to read!

That’s all for now. Off to Formspring!

  • 1. You’re right!
    2. You’re right! I’m all HEY I’VE GOT ENOUGH PLACES WHERE I CAN BULLY PEOPLE ALREADY
    3. UGH. NOT POLITE, ONLY ANNOYING and ALWAYS SELF PROMOTING. If someone auto dms me, I unfollow them. I can already tell I won’t like them and they’ll clog up my stream with crap and GOD KNOWS there’s enough of that in there already.

  • Laila

    1. Tag away, as long as it’s ME. Not of someone else’s kid just because you want me to see the photo. If I want to look, I will.
    2. Another thing to learn about so I can stay ahead of the game???
    3. Agree with Mother_Blogger and Jenn
