Great Danes are surprisingly fragile for their size. I can’t tell you how many times someone has asked if I put a saddle on my dogs and ride them. That answer would be a big no…it would most likely cause a severe back injury. I know the dogs are big but honestly, I don’t think they know it. Remember how Scooby Doo would jump up into Shaggy’s arms out of fright?

They have no idea how large they are.
Imagine an animal weighing 150 pounds (or a human) running around your house, happily whipping a tail back and forth that’s longer than your arm. Great Dane owners need to be ready for the occasional broken lamp or vase but when the thing that they break is their own tail open, life can get messy. This condition is called “Happy Tail” and we have been dealing with it for 6 weeks now.
Yesterday morning was the worst ever…

I spent over 2 hours cleaning the walls and another 2 at the vet getting his tail wrapped. I ordered a more humane collar for Jack to wear so that he isn’t so freaked out. (When he wears the traditional cone collar, he likes to head-butt people with it in hopes of removing it or knocking them down.)

You can tell Jack loves the look.

I know that my last post was all yummy deliciousnes but today is (Reee – Reee- Reee) gory day.

You’re super glad I share these photos, right?

How in the world did that happen to his tail??!! Your walls – ack!! I’m not sure who I feel more sorry for – you or him!
Holy crap! That’s gnarly to clean up! Poor baby! (And you!)
We have an 8 month old St. Bernard – a mere 118 lb puppy! We just had to take her to the ER yesterday because we thought she had swallowed her puppy kindergarten medallion. Still haven’t found it!
Jack is a cutie though! I love big dogs!
I would have totally used the bloody walls as a way to mess with my kids. When my daughter walked in and said “OMG what happened” – I would have answered with a straight-face… “Your brother is gone. I have had it with him not listening!!!” Hahahahaha.
Hope Jack feels better soon!
LMAO at Misty. Poor pup and poor you for having to clean that mess.
Awwww … the sad-clown-face-in-a-blue-collar picture is adorable! It’s like Emmet Kelly became a Great Dane.
The blood droplets are another thing altogether.
And watch out for when it starts to heal … that’s when he’ll start biting at it. Constant vigilance!
Needless to say, you deserve a big drink tonight!
*How* in the world do you clean that up?? I am gessing a case of Mr Clean Magic Erasers? Wouldn’t it have been easier to just *move*??
Oh poor thing! He doesn’t seem to think the collar is his thing at all. And poor you having to keep up with the mess!
Nice murder scene coverup.
I’m just glad to know my dog is not the only one who leaves my house looking like a crime scene!
Misty, my kids have seen this too many times to be fooled. I can bring him to your house though if you want to prank your kids. Let me know
Our lab had “happy tail” and it took me weeks to figure out where that spattered blood was coming from. It was completely freaking me out! Imagine my relief…
