Welcome to the June 2008 Perfect Post Awards!

In February of 2006, Lindsay and I launched the Perfect Post Awards in order to share personally captivating posts within a supportive community of talented bloggers like you.

If you’d like to present an award next month, e-mail me and I’ll send you the latest award button code a few days before the 1st. If you’re interested in looking through our past award posts, they can be found here. Thanks to each and every one of you for making the Perfect Post Awards such a great success!!

And now without further adieu, my Perfect Post Award goes to…

Sarcomical for Our Beloved Internet: Discrimination at First Sight Made Easy

Perfect Post Awards 06-08

My first thought after reading this post was that it should be an introduction page in a book about blogging. With BlogHer right around the corner, it is truly some food for thought.

Melissa writes:
“We have the luxury of being so extremely selective online, and with more and more interactive social applications (like my favorite, Twitter), it’s easier day by day to acquire and reject friends, usually without anyone getting hurt or being the wiser. I kind of like the ability to weed through and find some amazing people who I know I could carry on conversations with and whose mere telling of their stories online causes me to think, grow, cry, be inspired, and literally change my life…

One thing I am reminded of, though, is how this may possibly give a false sense of superiority that, honestly, we can’t quite get away with as easily in The Real World.”

Sarcomical is a blogger that I feel like I know because I have been reading her forever (three years, baby!). What’s funny is that she most likely has no clue how “tight” we are in my own crazy head which is exactly why I thought her post was brilliant.

This community draws you in so close that sometimes perfect strangers know more about you than the people who live in your own house. Also, reading and writing can be done with such anonymity that often times you have no idea how deeply you are affecting people…or not.

Melissa sums it with a smile, “Pick good friends. Love the options. Find cool people. Steer clear of bathtub photos. Don’t treat people like toads.”

I couldn’t agree more.

I Becky.

You love me. You really love me.

  • Yes, people can be incredibly hurtful and rude online. I’m sure you’ve heard the horrible story in the news about the woman who created a fake MySpace page to torment a teenage girl and the girl eventually killed herself! Also, I feel like people spend so much time talking to strangers online when they really should be talking to their neighbors and actual friends.
