Highs and Lows

June, thus far, has been a whirlwind. Everything under the bleeding, hot sun is going on at once. Sick kids, husband away, end of year celebrations at every turn, horse show, concerts, recitals, meetings, parties, paperwork and extremely high temperatures to round out the fun. Each one deserving a post of it’s own but I have no time to write. At night, I collapse into my bed lucky to have showered at some point and then wake up to do it all again. Currently, I do not even know what tense I’m speaking in.

Poor me? No way. Besides the illness, life has been grand. In order to catch you up in my usual unparalleled creative and brilliant style, I’ve composed a list. (You are exited, aren’t you?)

Sunday 6/1 High: 12 hours with an 8 year old & a pony. It was her first horse show this year and the first time in the older, more experienced class of riders. The highlight was the jump. All I could think of was Fonzi on his motorcycle as my daughter readied herself for her very first show jump.

She cleared it without falling off or dying much to my pre-cardiac arrest relief. What’s more is she took home 8 ribbons and A Reserve Champion sash. I could not have been prouder as she has worked for this all year - not only with hours and hours of practice but in conquering her fears of falling off…again.

Mon 6/2 Low: The stomach flu my 13 year old (my child that is never sick) came down with on Saturday took a weird turn and settled into her head & lungs. She stayed home from school with a fever.

Bonus Low- Late for dance pictures in highwaters.

Tues 6/3 High-Low mix: Had fun with my 8 year old on her field trip as I worried about my 13 year old still ill at home. Also miffed that teacher seemed unable to make eye contact with me all day. Perhaps she read my post about her? Nah.

Wed 6/4 Low: Spent good portion of the day with 13 year old in the doctor’s office and then later, the hospital. The diagnosis was pneumonia. When I finally got my child home and put to bed, we lost power due to a crazy ass storm that cause major havoc all over this area. Also, I had to drive to the pharmacy twice in the storm to get the necessary meds for my sick kid. Twice because the first time the doctor had not done his job and called it in properly. It seems I am Rx jinxed.

Thurs 6/5 High: Hung out with 13 year who was still sick as a dog but in good spirits. We caught up on some quality (and hard to come by) family TV like last season’s hilarious Bill Engvall Show and munched on our favorite popcorn (OK, mostly I munched because she did not have an appetite.)

Bonus High- I was fitted for my bridesmaid dress that evening and discovered that all my dieting has been in vain. The way the dress is cut another 5 pounds in either direction isn’t going to show so why the hell am I working so hard? Had more popcorn.

Fri 6/6 High-Low mix: 13 year old’s fever finally broke. Went to afternoon training session where my trainer stood me up. Pissed off but there and ready to work, I agreed to take the offer of a sub - a man. I’m not a fan of men trainers for me personally. Too pervy. However, this guy was great but it was still weird.

Sat 6/7 High: With temps in the 90’s, we lounged by the pool during the day. That evening, I gussied up my 8 year old and took her to her dance recital dress rehearsal. She was so freaking cute, I cannot even tell you. Afterwards, we went to polo for the first time this year.

Sun 6/8 High: My Nana turned 90 years old. Since she was hospitalized during the time that we had her surprise birthday party planned, she wondered why there was not more (much more) celebration in her honor on what she deemed “the most important day of the year”. My mother finally told her about all of our plans that were postponed due to her illness (she is still very weak) and that made her feel a bit better. However, my excuse of having a dance recital wasn’t quite up to snuff for her but luckily I had “my kid is getting over pneumonia” up my sleeve to explain why we didn’t make it over for a visit.

The dance recital was awesome. I have this problem that I tend get choked up when any kid is on stage so you can imagine how emotional I was during the two hour performance. My 8 year old shook her groove thang like nobody’s business and made us all proud. (Note: I am NOT the parent yelling in the video. I was the parent crying next to the parent yelling.)

Mon 6/9 High: My trainer was back at the gym so after she kicked my ass and I kicked my own at my class, I went shopping with my friend Marina for the day. It was glorious. A bikini, dresses for every wedding event and then some this summer as well as the most delicious patent leather shoes I’ve ever wiped my own drool from were purchased with a sly smile. As it turns out, retail therapy really does work.

And here we are - today. It’s still too hot to breathe outside but with only two days of school left, my evil diet on hold and my husband on his way home after being gone for almost 3 weeks, I can only beam. Plus, I’ve got those delicious shoes. Oh how he’s going to love them paired with my new tan lines.
