The Cooking Curse

Tuesday, May 27th 2008

I had the most lovely of Saturdays. The sun was finally shining on a weekend day and there was a glorious breeze making sure we were kept cool and comfortable. My mother came to stay and we had all kinds of fun by the pool, in the garden and cooking for the holiday weekend.

Just after I finished brushing my veggie kabobs with Italian dressing (thanks, Mir) and pulling the festive red, white & blue cupcakes from the oven, I said to my mother,

“This is such a great day. I love doing stuff like this with you…cooking and gardening. It’s so nice being together”.

I am not usually the one for the sap, that’s her, but I really felt it. I was so happy. It was such a perfect day. The kids were in the pool frolicking away. The flowers we planted were perfectly placed and well watered. The grill was fired up and cooking my turkey brats to sugary, brown deliciousness.

That was when I saw the flames shooting up from the oven. The electric oven that was turned off!

oven on fire

If you know me at all, you know I am no good in a fire. (I blame my mother for making me watch too much Little House on the Prairie on Fire as a child.) I was steady enough to grab the fire extinguisher from under the sink and shriek like a bat out of hell for my husband.

He came. He saw. He shushed and he put the fire out - but not before determining that we had to cut power at the circuit. And of course? The microwave and the oven are on the same circuit. (Before you ask, no we could not just unplug it. It is a crazy wall unit that was built in way before we got this house.)

I regained my composure, thanked God that this didn’t happen on a day that I was turning off the oven and going to bed, and returned to remove my mouthwatering feast on the grill. But uh-oh…when I went to turn off the grill, the damn knob broke.

So, I yelled for my husband again who came out and manhandled the grill into submission with one condition - I can’t use the middle burner.

No problem…I just have company coming tomorrow!!

broken grill

I called today and OF COURSE the part that I need to fix the oven and thereby use my microwave is on backorder. The grill also will take 2 weeks (at least) to fix. So I’m without anything but my stove top and a busted ass grill to cook on until God knows when.

Let’s recap. I’m down three appliances, all used for cooking, in one day. If that’s not a curse or a sign from the heavens, I don’t know what is.

But I had a lovely weekend…

Front Garden 2008

How was yours?

And more importantly - who wants to cook me dinner?

*Lindsay at Graco just had a brilliant idea. Wouldn’t it be great if the PR/media people from Sears/Kenmore or Jenn-Air could help a girl out? A girl who may need to wait a fortnight to cook again? Yeah, that would be really cool. How do I get that to happen?

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!

You love me. You really love me. Dontchya?

  • GAH!

Why am I suddenly having images of you trying to make grilled cheese sandwiches over a tikki torch???

  • Maybe there’s a chance JennAir and Kenmore are social media savvy and they stop by to say “we’ll pay for all your carry out for the next 2 weeks!” Then they send you all new appliances and some more flowers to plant. Then you would be blessed and not cursed! Social media has done stranger things for people these days… (on a side note- your flowers and walkway do look beautiful!)

  • Lindsay,
From your lips to Kenmore & Jennair’s ears! Brilliant idea…hmmmmm….now I need to find out if they have blogs.

  • LOL! And I thought I was the only one who could blow up a wall oven…
I’d love to have you to dinner, but since I don’t cook… that really wouldn’t work. I’ll have to check our schedule to see when Mr. will be home. What day is good?

  • My mom came to visit us…but there wasn’t much cooking and bonding going on. Just your average Saturday and Sunday around the B-zo household. We’re not big on many holidays, since in our bizness there really aren’t any holidays. Altho we’re throwing a July 4 shindig if you wanna zip up here — right after my husband gets home from work.

(you gotta teach me how to put a link on this blog …. again, loser here)

Contact Sears/Kenmore and Jenn-Air and let them know you are the blogger they are looking for! Let them know all about your blog life and its far-reaching implications for marketing their products. Nothing better than free advertising — and free appliances!

What have you got to lose?

Glad you had a great weekend. Boy, that stinks about all your cooking appliances. I agree you should definitely get some free goods from Sears and Jenn Air.

On the bright side, It looks like a divine intervention from a higher power that says you’re not meant to cook. (Maybe just have a live-in one instead?) Just a thought….
    I’m dreaming out loud.

  • Ugh! That totally stinks about your cooking appliances…it is, however, a great reason to go out to dinner. Glad you had a good weekend in spite of it all.

    Your flowers are beautiful!

  • If this had happened to me, I’d be celebrating.

One (or three) more reasons not to cook.

    I’m always looking for excuses.

  • ..on the other hand you could thank your lucky stars that (1) you SAW the oven burning (some people miss (Huge) things that are right in front of them) (2) that you were HOME when it decided to turn on you (3) and hubby was home to help in the ‘put out’. WHEW!!! Sorry it will take so long for the part! But there’s lots of things you can cook on the stove - be your creative self!

While I feel really bad for you and your starving family, Jason and I did truly enjoy the potato casserole that you had to hand over. Jason was very happy.

I am sure you will figure out plenty of things to cook on the stove top, just don’t ask you know who (Mom) for recipes!

  • Excuse me, missy, but in all your “linky-love” I did not see a link to this:

Yeah, bet you thought I forgot. And I bet you didn’t want the folks at Sears to see THAT, huh?

  • I would just take that sort of thing as a sign.

But seriously, all the cooking appliances at once? That’s rough.

  • LOL You think?

The grill I am not shocked about. The oven (and the fact that the microwave is on the same circuit and cannot be used until the oven is fixed) and the timing of all 3 cooking sources having issues at the same time, is what sucks.

Like I know how to cook over a campfire!?

  • I left a voicemail with Marilyn at Whirlpool (they own Jenn Air) headquarters today telling them of your starving family and your amazing blog.
