In the Dirt

Sunday, April 13th 2008

On Thursday, I had an incredibly large amount of mulch delivered to the house. I wasn’t so swift on the calculations as to how much I would need so a lot is what I got. You can read that story here. But don’t forget to scroll down to see the ass shot of the mulch man. No, he wasn’t amused with my picture taking.

On Friday, my sweet mother came over to help me garden. She is a saint. Wait…I’m actually not sure that she could qualify for sainthood because of the whole nunnery ditchery thing but she is as good as one to me and that’s what counts. Oh, and she sings like an angel. You can see an example of that here. No, she wasn’t amused with my secret flip work.

Note: This was through a window so turn it up, yo.

Saturday, we weeded and mulched some more. With 3 out of 5 flowerbeds done, I am left with more mulch than I needed, ugly man arms from lifting it all and dirt in every single pore of my being. You can see some shots of that here.

Dirt EverywhereDirty MeRuined My nails

And no, I’m not amused by dirt inside my ears. Honestly, I don’t think I have been dirtier in all my life so yes, I had to take a picture…or 10.

You tell me. When was the absolute dirtiest moment of your life?
What were you doing to get that way?
And yes, I mean with actual dirt not a dirty mind.

You love me. You really love me.

  • If that is the dirtiest you have ever been …you, my dear are obviously not a mud wrestler.

    (Then again, neither am I.)

  • most recently I was covered in Sheet rock dust. Scraping the concrete floor to be able to stain it.
You could put mulch in the neighbors beds.

  • I think I was dirtier than that every day of every summer from the time I was five through about nine years old. And I don’t think I bathed every night either. You guys are all cuties.

  • Either after demo-ing our old kitchen with the plaster walls or after a 3 day hike. Hard to say though. The plaster walls probably even made my lungs dirty. On the other hand, the 3 day hike involved blisters on top of blisters which isn’t the same as dirt, of course, but it hurts!

  • My dad used to work in an aluminum foundry, and my sister and I had a chance to earn some money by spending our Sundays picking aluminum scrap out of piles or barrels of black powder-fine sand (I guess it was sand). We were covered in it by the time we got home. We did make some decent money, though, for that age (10-12 yrs.)

  • Those aren’t man arms, they are Linda Hamilton Terminator 2 arms, my lifelong ambition. Dirtiest: hiking for 3 months in the Sierras.

  • I’ve always said that you are a dirty, dirty girl.

  • 10 yards of mulch = 10 yards of filth.
Fun times! But don’t you feel great when you get out of the shower??

  • You are not alone. I can’t work outside doing any kind of yard or garden work for any amount of time without coming in absolutely filthy. I’ve always been that way. I worked for the park and recreation department for 4 summers in college and every single day I came home head to toe filthy from working in the gardens.

I loved it. Sometimes I think I should have got a horticulture degree instead of one in History.

  • You look great! Like a garden warrior.

I once had rocks delivered and I too miscalculated. They came while no one was home and just left it all in the driveway. Mountains and mountains of tiny little black and gray rocks. I’ll never live that down.

  • Accch! The shot was not as bad as I expected it to be! That was toward the beginning of Friday – if you recall I couldn’t quite stand up by Saturday afternoon! One weekend of hell reaps a summer of beauty – well worth it! Can’t wait to plant all the flowers in May. We should be healed and ready by then. You get the back flower bed with your new mouse friends – I hear they breed in May.

  • I remember once my newborn threw up and pooped on me while I was trying to eat lunch. I felt pretty gross and dirty. But damn it, I finished that lunch. Then I showered.

Best. (and most hypnotic) line. Ever! Don’t repeat it, even to yourself if you don’t want to find yourself repeating it ALL DAY!

  • Dirtiest I’ve ever been? Probably that time in summer camp when I was embarrassed to get naked in front of the others so I went a whole week hiking and horseback riding and not taking a shower.

  • Remind me not to sit next to musing if we ever gather…

  • I have so been there. Last spring, I moved most of five yards of mulch. I had to – it was IN MY DRIVEWAY meaning that I had to PARK ON THE STREET.

But I felt so butch while I was doing it!

  • You just reminded me to look for “non-greasy” sunscreen.
If you slather on sunscreen and then spend 7 hours on a motorcycle, the dirt CLINGS and is pushed into every pore. It’s disgusting.
