Meeting Katie Couric

Sunday, April 6th 2008

My first thought after getting the call that we were invited to CBS to meet Katie Couric was, “I’m going to have to come up with something better to say to her than OMG, I LOVE YOU KATIE!!

But I do love Katie. I always have. I was a huge Matt & Katie Today Show fan and my mornings haven’t been the same since she left the show. Like any lame fan, I feel as though we share deep connections that should allow us to go out for coffee and paint each other’s toenails. She is from Virginia. She has 2 daughters, one the same age as my own, and she’s cute and really funny. Need I go on? Secret soul sisters, right?

So when I heard that she was interested in speaking to Mommy Bloggers and perhaps doing more blogging herself, I felt an even deeper bond. I wasn’t even nervous because it seemed as though I was going to see an old friend - not meet a super celebrity. And honestly? That’s how she treated us - like girlfriends.

She sat down on the floor in her delicious, white office and we talked and talked. We talked about blogging, of course, but we also discussed the election, her leaving the Today Show (my question), our kids and the internet, being a working mother, Twitter (yes, we were totally lobbying to get her Tweet on) and reality television. There was more but since it was all “off the record”, I won’t tease you.

While in her office, perched upon a yummy, white chair only 4 feet from the cross-legged Katie, I began receiving “urgent” text messages from my husband.

Call home asap

I texted back:

I’ll call when I get out.

Him again:

Where is the phone book?

Me:

Dude - I am in Katie’s office RIGHT NOW!!

I guessed that Mr. Mom (aka my husband) was having some issues with the kids/dogs/home that I left him with. Call me evil but I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped my lips as I turned off my phone and rejoined the conversation.

Dude, it was Katie. For real. And I wasn’t missing any.of.it.
