Tomorrow my mother is visiting with her new beau. My uncle is also coming over to introduce his new girlfriend to the family. It works to spread the awkward around, I guess. I’m serving ribs to ease the tension. That’s great date food, right?
I was setting the stage, so to speak, for my 8 year old earlier today.
You know… Unga is bringing her new boyfriend over to meet us tomorrow.
John?
No, Jim.
What happened to John?
They aren’t dating anymore.
Who dumped who?
They just stopped talking. Look, that’s not important. What’s important is that you are polite. And it’s not polite to mention anyone’s ex-boyfriend in front of the new boyfriend. Does that make sense?
Sure, Mom. (pause) But are they sleeping over?
No!

well, I would trade some of that familial awkwardness to see everyone that I miss. of course that feeling only lasts about as long as it takes my sister to make me crazy to the point I say something to my mom who tells me she’s so tired of us tattling as adults, then my dad jumps in - then I say I’m ready to go home.
