Big birds soar overhead all the time here. Usually they don’t come this close.
I had to take these shots through the window because I knew that if I opened up the sliding glass door, he would fly away.
Last weekend, we had visitors that left us worse for wear. We’ve all come down with some dreaded blech bug that they must have brought up with them from the sunny south. Between snow days, holidays and sick days, I feel like January has been a wash as far as school is concerned for the kids. Hell, maybe I should consider homeschooling…heh.
I ♥ Vicki, Tee, Lisa's Chaos, Nina, Raehan, Unga Chunga, Value wIT, Bec, Miz S, Catherine ryan, Hope, Tuesday, Atomic Bombshell, Amanda, Indigo, Ladybug Crossing, Erica, Angie, and Leanne.

I believe that’s an American Kestrel - shorter than a Red Tail, hooked bill and big owly eyes - they’re beautiful. And they prey on smaller birds, like pigeons, doves and of course rodents.
Just thought you’d like to know!

They will eat chickens, too!
I have hated January so far.
Cool bird.
Sorry to hear your under the weather. Hope you feel better. Nothing’s worse than a sick husband or kids. Oh wait.. there kind of one in the same. Take care.
Homeschool? You? LOL!!! That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.

Holy God! That’s a big bird. We get escapee Peacocks sometimes but mostly the biggest bird around here is a crow. That is so amazing!

You know I read about you being sick and I thought you meant the first round but then that was before the visit - just didn’t click. Hope you all are feeling better soon. I will guard and protect your eldest lest she fall prey as well. As I was driving home from your house I thought ” oh, crap I put my hand on their back and front door knobs - do not put your hands to your face - wash your hands immediately after you get home - paranoia has set in.
The kids have been sick three or four times since the week before Christmas, and I’m trying to complete an internship before baby. Stupid me. Cannot WAIT until February and the start of spring in California.
Beautiful bird there. Almost looks like an owl.
Thinking of you.

That’s a beautiful bird, though I don’t think it’s a kestrel.
Kestrels are only 9 inches from tip of tail to beak, and wear the falcon mask.
Maybe a larger hawk. Broad winged?
You’d be the best to guage size–a magnificent bird to keep your eyes open for again!

That’s neither a kestrel (smaller, redder) or an owl (??)- it’s a juvenile coopers hawk. Very nice visitor, indeed. Nice view from your deck, btw.
