Home Stretch

Friday, December 14th 2007

How did it get to be December 14th already? Don’t you guys still have Thanksgiving leftovers in your fridge? I’m not sure how the time flew by so fast but with less than two weeks until Christmas all over the world, and more importantly here in Petroville, there is much to be done.

Delegating tasks is essential because as much as we truly can do it all (we usually do, don’t we?) an ulcer is not on anyone’s Christmas list. My husband always cooks our holiday dinners and he usually shops for them too. You can find him holding up lanes of traffic in the local Safeway annually on December 24th trying to find the perfect rib roast. You will also find him spotted with calf and shin bruises from the impatient ladies that “accidentally” run their carts into him to prod him along. Secretly, I think he likes the attention.

My mother and sisters bring food, wine and armfuls patience which is very important because by the time they arrive, I am clean out. This year, my cousin has also offered to help cook. Sounds like a family effort, doesn’t it? It will need to be thanks to my guest list. I am seriously considering begging the doctor for a prescription to get me through the day.

Kimberly, your house is beautiful! How come you haven’t spoken to us in over 2 years?
Why, you’re an asshole. Please come in.

My daughters have been helping me wrap all of the gifts and we’ll make a mountain of cookies soon as well. They are both good little troopers who, besides groaning, moaning and eye rolling, tend to do what I ask of them.

Here you see them rolling the trash cans up our driveway in the foggy afternoon.

Yes, the trash can is taller than my 8 year old. It’s okay…it’s good for her.

What’s your status now that we are nearing the holiday home stretch?
Shopping done? Menu planned? Cards mailed? Wine chilled? (We may need that early.)

  • Let’s see… no, no, no, and no! And you’ve reminded me! We need to hit the liquor store before the big storm hits this weekend!

I like the pic… my not-yet-4-year-old SO wants to push our garbage bin in. As much as I’d like to let him, it would crush him at this point. But as soon as he’s able, the job is HIS!!

  • Most of it’s done ( ?… cue heart attack as I try to think of “who else am I forgetting?”)
My husband stopped by the 24-hour WalMart last night at 11:30 on his way home from work and got a couple of perfect presents for certain people. I mailed out cards going the farthest just today and the rest we can give in person. I hope that’s it.

HOW many acres do you have? I would be happy with a half, way down there by the road. I wouldn’t bother you a bit and I’d take the trash cans down for you.

  • I hope that some day I have a mountain of kids and family, and a big daunting list of things to do. Enjoy it!

  • Send me a list! I’m searching out some dessert recipes tonight. They won’t go to waste with your crowd! Bobbe and I can buy and/or put together anything you need! Yes, I’ll bring some patience and definitely some liquids.

  • I’m way behind on everything but surprisingly calm about it. I guess I am saving my nervous breakdown for Christmas Eve?

  • You are so far ahead of me. Of course, most people have more than zero done. I know my family assumes that I will be hosting, yet again. And I probably will. I anticipate they’ll ask about it this weekend at my cousin’s graduation. I’m considering turning the porchlight off though and not answering the door.

  • Yesterday i dipped things in chocolate. Right now I am baking cookies. Later it will be something else. Are you ready for the wintery weekend predicted for us?

  • Wow that is one long driveway, I don’t envy them having to pull the bins up that every week! I love how you are in the car – are you driving behind them?

  • We aren’t having a family holiday this winter, mainly because we are homeless right now.

I know all about the whole “Wow, you suck a lot, here let me cater to you and pout up with huge doses of your inane commentary and bad behavior in my home for several hours and pretend to be happy of the privilege.” Been there, done that, I’ll pray for ya.

It is nice to know that I’m not the only person in the world who uses their dashboard as a miniature filing cabinet for those absolute essentials like yesterday’s mail and a children’s mini-book. *chuckle*
