Yesterday, as I was blissfully enjoying a much needed pedicure and the delicious People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, I witnessed a new (at least to me) spa phenomenon.
A perfectly put together woman in her thirties entered the beauty salon followed by the most darling 3 year old that I’ve seen since mine were that age. Okay, I’ll admit it…I had evil thoughts.
Hmpt…she thinks she’s just going to sit down here and get a pedicure with her 3 year old? Ha! This ought to be a laugh.
I put Matt Damon aside and settled in to watch what I was sure to be the downfall of Mrs. Perfect.
What woman in her right mind thinks they can just waltz in and have spa services while their child is well behaved and a delight to all who have come to partake in relaxation and beauty?
Much to my surprise, it was quite clear that Mrs. Perfect knew exactly what she was doing. She sat first and rolled up her jeans, eased her sweet angel on to her lap and after testing, they both put their feet into the water.
Brilliant!
So far, Mrs. Perfect was squashing all my hopes of being a spectator to her destruction. After they were settled into their warm foot bath for two, she pulled out an ipod and asked her darling what she would like to hear. I was floored! Why hadn’t I ever thought of this? Mrs. Perfect had a few books and snacks in her bag which led to further peace in the salon.
And you know what? I never heard one peep out of Darling. I was amazed.
Frankly, I was more amazed that I had not come up with this idea myself. Sure, I had tried to bringing my daughters at that age (ONCE) to get “our” nails done but, alas, it was a disaster. As soon as they had polish on their nails, they wanted to get jiggy all over the salon and make a rainbow on the floor out of the nail polish bottles – which was not appreciated in the least.
The key is the chair. Put them in the chair with you!
As I was leaving, I learned that Mrs. Perfect was not the only one smarter than me. Another mom, not looking as perfect – thank God, plopped down with her sweet lap darling, flipped the heated massage button and asked for a pedicure straight up.
I exited with pretty toes and Matt under my arm but also holding my head high as a proud member of woman kind. Us gals are savvy, I tell you.
This new knowledge left me wishing I still had a wee one to share
a chair with during my next pedicure.
Well…almost.

I think it is all great and all. But what about alone time and relaxing. If you are entertaining your child, I can’t see you relaxing, unless of course you are going away and you just want your toes to look pretty. By the way yours do look good.
Oh my God that’s brilliant.
I can’t wait to try it with mine!!
(and yeah, alone time is great in all in theory – but finding something semi-relaxing to do WITH your child is nice too… and sometimes it’s not so easy to get time alone, whether you need it or not)

DD1 is one of those kids who will sit down for a mani while I get a pedi & get herself the full service down to designs (like flowers) painted on her nails. When your 3YO will sit like that & get the full service, they charge you more than the just polish price usually charged for most 3YOs. So there’s cons to this small miracle too. I’m just saying.
I pay the extra buck for nail dryer and she sits still while the polish drys too. I also know adults who do not sit for the length as well as she does. I also know that DD2 will not be that kid. She’s just too busy, so I’m thrilled to know this little secret. Now all 3 of us can share this girly experience together.

It would have worked with you but salon spas were not popular back in the 70’s. Had the pedicure/manicure myself yesterday and struggled to stay awake (it was late afternoon). Every saw anyone nodding off during a manicure? That’s relaxation!
Woh…. Hang on…. There are kids out there who will sit still? I’m not sure how to react to that…

Trust me, you are smart. Just look at your two daughters as prime examples.
I can’t wait for the day when you can take your niece for a pedicure!
