…make evil lasers shoot from my eyes.
I couldn’t figure out why I was so shaky this morning. I kept messing up as I taught class and a few times felt like I was about to lose my balance from just being light headed. After class, and into the sunny day it all began to make a migraine of sense.
I always see spots when I’m about to get a killer migraine but I hadn’t had one in years. I was relieved to know what was behind my foul feelings but in one heck of a hurry to get home and into a dark room.
After some Excedrin Migraine and a brief nap, my head still feels quite raw but I’m over the worst of it…and lucky for me, just in time to help with math homework.

Oooh, oooh, I have some ideas…
Preventative: drink lots of water, make sure you are getting enough calcium/magnesium and B2 (advice from neuro)
Midstream: I’ve tried Zomig and Maxalt - both work well, but add to the nausea. I’m a big fan of a nap, cup of coffee and ice on my head.
Here’s hoping it goes away and stays away…
My daughter gets them and one trigger for her was orange juice. Hope your head feels better.
So sorry :sorry: Wish I could make you feel better!
I only ever had one migraine in my whole life, so I have no advice for you. But I’ll tell you what, DAMN that was serious pain for 2 days straight. I’m glad you’re feeling a little better, at least better enough to help with homework.
I’m sorry you are with me in the migraine pool. *HUGS* Heat and a storm brewin’ are my triggers as well as MSG. I usually take two Motrin, drink a Coke and eat chocolate for it to get to a tolerable level. Sometimes I even have to do all of that and close all the blinds and sleep it off. I had a touch of one today, along with everyone I know. It’s the weather!
oh no! feel better. my hub suffers from horrible migraines and i get pretty bad hormonal and weather triggered headaches. we both down capsules of liquid advil when they strike. hope tomorrow is better for you!
Wish I knew of a good remedy to share, but I don’t have a lot of experience with migraines. I’ve only had three in my life. About one every seven years. Which, come to think of it, means I’m overdue for another. Darn.
I get mine from pepperoni, don’t know what in the pepperoni actually triggers it. For me Advil migraine and a nap takes the edge off.
Hot shower. Quiet, dark room. HEATING PAD!!!!!
(After I down a cocktail of Excedrin, Advil & Aleve)
So sorry you had to deal with that. Hubs is a migraine sufferer and loves the Excederin Migraine. Wash it down with a Coke. Isn’t the caffiene supposed to be good for it?
Hope you’re feeling better soon.
I have migraines. The bad part is that I wake up with them so rarely do I have the chance to feel one coming on. However, there was a burger joint where I used to live and they offered a Blue Cheese Burger that was to die for and the third time I ate one, and had a raging headache within two hours, I started to think. So, being the brilliant one, I had another burger a few days later. Sure enough, I had a headache two hours later. I use Excedrin Migraine, two Sudafed (because I get really stuffy on the left side) and drink a coke. Then I need to have quiet and dark and laying down. If I can do those three things, I can stave off the nausea/vomiting that comes next.
Short answer cuz I’m short on time this AM…I’m on Topamax daily and I take Relpax when I need it. Check ‘em out. It’s working for me. Do a search on my blog for migraines lol
Welcome to migraine city. An ex boyfriend had an ex girlfriend who used Zomig and ever since he mentionned it to me I have thanked the heavens above because although he was a dork, he gave me the gift of a migraine remedy that works. I also use Advil liquigels when I don’t think the migraine merits a Zomig (I think only a migraine sufferer would understand the different levels….). My biggest trigger unfortunately is low pressure systems, so I can tell the weather as a result (or impending weather). Oh and lack of or oversleep. Not too much, not too little, somewhere around 7 hours a night is good!
It’s a migraine riddled world! A heating pad on my shoulders, excedrin migraine in my belly, and a nice quiet room work for me. Oh, and we order pizza cos I won’t cook with a migraine.
Oddly enough, I find that sniffing mint scented essential oil helps my migraines. That and chocolate.
(But I think the chocolate is just a throw in!)
Yes, yes and sadly, yes. I have a headache nearly every day, but a migraine only occassionally. It comes out of nowhere it seems and then I’m down for the count. I see “stars”, I feel dizzy and sometimes my hand goes numb. The only thing that helps is taking my migraine medicine, a muscle relaxer, the heating pad and sleeping in a dark, quiet room. They are miserable so I sympathize. Take care, I hope you feel better!
No advice on migraines, but it sounds horrible. Once in college I had a bad headache (probably just hungover) and I wrapped an ace bandage over my eyes and around my head. I feel asleep, but when I woke up I forgot that the ace bandage was on my head and I thought I was BLIND!
My husband, a very fit 43 year old, has suffered migraines his entire life. He unfortunately took Imitrix to get rid of his migraines after they strike, and after several years of Imitrix use he ended up almost having a heart attack and had to have a stint placed in his “widow maker” artery. Apparently, Imitrix is not easy on hearts.
His cardiologist and neurologist said he should be “preventing” migraines, not treating them after they strike. He is now on a high blood pressure medication, Propranolol, even though his blood pressure is perfect. The side effects of propranolol actually prevent migraines. Then he was put on a “no sodium nitrates” diet - re: no hot dogs, lunch meat or cured bacon, and he was told to go off caffiene.
Now with the propranolol and the diet changes, he has gone from several severe migraines a week, to about three migraines in the last 7 months.
He learned the hard way that prevention is the way to go.
I get migraines too and I feel for you completely!! I hate them with a passion. My triggers are changing my sleep patterns (like staying up until 3am reading because I just can’t put the book down!) not eating (because I’m too into the book to make myself something to eat) and of course - dear Aunt Flo - which I’ve remedied so far by skipping over the “white pills” in my BC pack (at my doctor’s suggestion) and starting right in with my next pack… no Aunt Flo - no migraine! Simple as that! I was getting them about once a month - I haven’t had one (related to that) in about 2 months now (which is when I started this new schedule with the BC) and when I do get them because I’m not smart enough to do the things I need to do to prevent them (ie - eat & sleep!) I have to take an Imitrex… which works well in getting rid of the headache, nausea, light & sound sensitivity - but it leaves me feeling drained of all energy. It’s the lesser of two evils for me though! Good luck with them - I hope they are few and far between for you!
I take Imitrex, it’s uber-expensive, but soooooooo worth it.
Since I had my eyes checked and my glasses perscription updated a year ago, the frequency of my migraines has really gone down.
Zomig. It’s the miracle drug! As long as you take it at the very beginning, you’re in the clear!
Been having migraines for 20 years. Started on zomig about 4 years ago? They helped immensely! But like all meds, I think a body eventually becomes used to everything and effectiveness wears off. So the migraines are once again becoming more frequent.
For care once they come on I take zomig only if absolutely necessary (because side-effects do not make me happy). I’ve been through imitrex (which had horrible side effects for me) and several other after-onset meds that were less effective.
I try to do more natural stuff like ice/cold packs and peppermint oil/lavender oil, eye covers, dark room, lying down, etc when I can.
Best of luck with yours. They definitely suck. Congratulations on your anniversary!
I had migraine from I was a teenager until I was well passed 40. Between 30-40 years old I had a hell. They say that it can be a top of migraines in that age. I had 3 days EVERY week with migraine and 1 day with tension headache. PHEW! Am I glad to be rid off that stuff now???!!!
Mine were not stress related as so many are. It was influenced by a lot of factors like work light, strong sunlight, chocolate, nuts, onion, garlic, spices, salt, citrus, cheese, alcohol, other medicines (changed them), teeth problems infected gum (fixed it), menstrual cycle, parfumes and so on.
I agree with the mentioning of getting enough calcium/magnesium and B2 too. I had a nasal spray (Imigran) that were effective, but destroyed my mucuous membrane inside the nose, so I’d not recommend that one! Take care :-)
MSG, aged cheese, wine, chocolate(dark chocolate O.K.?!), cashews are all triggers for me. Also changes in the barometer and dust-ha, as if my house is ever going to be dust free. I usually take an imetrex as soon as I feel a twinge. If I ignore it until too late I have to seek out a dark room with no noise, no cooking odors then put my head under the pillow and hang on. With a bad migraine I have blurred vision with “floaties”, nausea etc. I have become much more proactive about avoiding the bad stuff (except for chocolate) and I only have 1-2 migraines a month. Good luck ,
