Hose Alone

Sunday, February 25th 2007

Thursday night as we’re lying in bed, my husband asks,

“You know we’re expected to go to the Leukemia Ball in D.C. Saturday night, right?”

Ummmmmm, no. He claimed that he told me about this months ago but that is just not the case. Us women tend to prepare for little things like BALLS!

Cinderella's Gown

That gave me only 2 already very filled up days to find a sitter and a gown. I had tough luck in both departments. I ended up wearing a dress that I already own - a strapless summer dress for heck’s sake.

My third dilemma was pantyhose.

These pictures were taken during the summer (and yes, I went sans hose then but it was not a formal event).
These are not the shoes I wore last night, but all in all, you get the shivering idea.

I elected to wear hose but as I looked around at all the tootsies at ball, I found that the majority were hose-less. It seemed that only the 60+ crowd chose to shimmy them on. How did I not get that memo?

Riddle me these:
Do you wear pantyhose with a gown?
How old is your Home Alone age?

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!

You love me. You really love me. Dontchya?

  • I seldom wear gowns, but I suspect that I would wear pantyhose. a) it’s cold as hell, and b) the pasty white dry skin on my legs might scare my fellow party-goers.

You look sooooooo gorgeous in that dress!

I think my parents left us (4 kids) alone at night when my older sister was 12, but that was back in the halcyon days of yore. I left my girls alone at night when they were 13, I guess, but they didn’t have any little siblings to look after.

  • I loathe pantyhose…back when I was young we NEVER went without them.
Nowadays, when “professional” women can bare-leg it to work and wear flat, open-toed sandals, I think you can go with the flow and go hose-less.
But I would have felt weird about it. Something about formal just says “WITH hose” to me.
But I’m old-fashioned. And just plain old.

My kids stay home alone for a couple-three hours at a go…when I was 12 I stayed home with my younger brother during the summers whilst my parents were at work.
I think it depends on the kid.
    1. Are they responsible enough to wipe up the blood if they play with knives?
    2. Do they know where the fire extinguishers are in case they play with matches?
    3. Do they know how to dial 911?

If the answer to the above questions is YES, you can probably leave them.
    *teehee*

  • I’m all about the no-hose trend. I HATE them!

    Great dress!

Are you a metro DC girl? Me too! Springfield, VA.

    Hope the ball was fun!

  • Have a wonderful day!

  • Hoseless in D.C. in February? I don’t know about that!

  • Unless I’m wearing sandals or flip flops there is always something on my feet if I’m putting shoes on. Yes, always have panty hose on, even under my pants for church or a special outing. I’m a panty hose girl and I tend to think that women wearing dresses without panty hose don’t usually (somtimes it looks nice) have pretty enough legs to pull it off. You look like you are one of the exceptions. Yeah for you!! Very pretty dress!

  • I cannot stand hose, especially nude ones. I will suck it up and wear black ones - if I have too!!! That is why usually anytime I have to wear something, I go with black.

I have no clue what stay home alone age is - I think with most it is 12,

  • For formal dress I wear them even thugh I hate them.

  • Sherry

The new fashion is NO HOSE. My daughter informed one night when we were going out. She told me out and out how stupid I would look and no one wears them anymore. It is a hard decision, if you want be in style, but if you want to be warm, I say wear them. Your dress is beautiful by the way.
12 is a good age, but it totally depends on the child.

  • I’m not a huge fan of pantyhose, so I rarely ever wear them. Your dress is really cute though. Reminds me of my junior prom dress (the black/white and stitching at the bottom.) You look great!

  • No hose in February? Brrrr. Yeah, I wear them if I must. I prefer tights in the winter though… Warmer and cozier! You look great!

  • I don’t think hose are required anymore. That is just my opinon though. I like the dress. Damn I miss summer!

  • The dress is beautiful! I am impressed you managed to pull it all together in such short notice. Things like this are not easy for us moms. I would wear pantyhose to a formal event as well.

  • No, we’ve given up panty hose, along with shoes other than flip flops. But I scrutinized Helen closely last night at the Oscars and she could have easily worn flip flops with that spectacular gown and still been the best looking woman there. Panty hose restrict blood flow to the brain. Vote no to those.

11, to care for a 6 year old sister, for 12 hours a day. For a year. Somebody should have been reported. Instead, that somebody turned into a fascinating and dynamic older woman who became my good friend. And I miss her.

You, on the other hand, call yourself a Momma, so I would say, um, 11 briefly while dashing out for a quick errand in broad daylight, maybe 12 or 13 with frequent check-ins. By 14 they should not be left home alone again until they leave home. :duh:

  • I am old, so panty hose really help hide some of my flaws (my legs, for instance).

  • Since I’ve never worn a gown….

And my Home Alone sign got to be about 9 months old, then I gave it up for Lent and the love of a nice woman.

  • I hate panty hose with a pasion. I think I have worm them maybe a handful of times in my whole life, You look fabulous in the dress.

  • I guess I’m one of the old ones. I dont’ feel ‘dressed up’ without them - even in the summer. We used to have a supervisor who went around touching people’s legs to be sure they were in Pantyhose Compliance!

  • And you didn’t call me because??? I’d have taken both of them for you, you know… Silly girl!

You looked gorgeous, dear. Hose? Yes. Always… looks better in the light. Better than my pasty legs… UGH!

  • It’s been well over a year since I’ve worn hose. And even longer since I’ve been to a ‘ball’.

Zed can stay home by himself at age 11. He’s been very responsible since we started back last August. Elle and Zed combined though? Not for a couple more years. When it’s both, I get a sitter.

  • I don’t wear a dress if it’s below 75 degrees, so, no hose.

  • Yep. Definitely hose. If for no other reason than to keep my feet more comfortable in heels.

Home alone? Having 2 very good built-in baby sitters (dogs) and a good friend down the road, eleven.

  • It’s a DC thing. They say we have no style … if we do, it’s just, um, different. You know, the, “I’m so busy saving/destoying/protesting the world that I don’t have time to look nice” excuse!

On question 2, my kids are tiny, so I haven’t eaned an opinion on that yet.
