What’s Going On?

Thursday, February 22nd 2007

I know. I know. I haven’t posted since Monday. Whatever…I’m a slacker.

I start teaching my own class in one week. What does that have to do with the price of eggs in China? I couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you is that I have been working my fool butt off getting ready for J-Day. (The J stands for Jazzercise…really, come on.)

You would think after all of these years being a star student, getting up on stage and leading the class would pose no physical challenge. Funny, I thought the same thing right up until my the whites of eyes turned red, the inside of my mouth became the texture of warm sandpaper and my knees shook like a bowl full of jelly. Not sexy and confidence inspiring. No.

During the month between becoming certified and actually teaching your own class, new instructors are encouraged to lead portions of someone else’s class. The idea is to build up to teaching a whole class. Well, I’ve been doing that and the results have frightened me into jazzericing every free moment of the day. I am so wiped after just a few routines up there that I’ve been scared to death. My fear is that I won’t be able to make it for an entire class with out passing out. I have other fears too - like sounding like Darth Vader or not being able to get rid of the interference on my microphone. I have even had dreams about it which makes me worry that crazy is coming to visit.

So far, I’ve mainly been leading the floor work routines (weight training & stretching and ender) - about 5 routines. But today was different. Today, I bit the bullet and led the 38 minute aerobic section - 10 routines! This is huge. I did not pass out. I did not mess up (okay…only a little but I kept going). I didn’t get stressed about the feedback issue and tried to ignore the sound of my own breathing in the headset. And the big part…I even cracked a couple of well received jokes while I was up there sweating and panting like a cow. They laughed and it was a good thing!

This is a personal triumph that I’m thrilled to have behind me. I’d be lying if I said it was easy or that I don’t still feel kind of tingly a few hours later but I guess that’s fine too. Tingly is better than unconscious, right?

What else is going on in the blogoshere?

Leanne is retiring the Thursday Thirteen after this week. If you’ve ever played the 13 or enjoyed reading anyone else’s, you might want to stop by and say a few words. As someone who helped host the 13 in its earlier days, I can tell you that Leanne has put an insane amount of work and time into it during the last 80+ weeks. She’s amazing and deserves a parade of appreciation for her creativity and generosity. At least, that’s what I think.

What say you?

  • Oh. I loved doing the Thursday Thirteen.

Just your description of your jazzercising made me want to lie down. I am exercise-phobic. Hooray for your personal triumph!

  • YAY YOU!!!! Your doing so awesome with the Jazzercise!

I never played the TT - I am a loser like that - 13 was a lot to have to come up with on a weekly basis, but I did always read them whenever someone I know participated,

P.S. I recceived my birthday card - Thank you SO SO much. It meant a whole lot to me!!!

  • Congrats on the Jazzercise!! 10 routines?! Wow. Wow! AND jokes? I’m so impressed. Take it easy on yourself… It sounds like you’re doing AWESOME. I bet your favorite instructors were nervous when they got started too….

  • :yahoo: Congrats on doing those classes!

And, Leanne. I think she should have a parade in her honor for the time and energy she has put into this.

  • If it wasn’t so far to drive I might would come take your class!

I bet you are the greatest instructor going…..and Leanne does deserve a parade in her honor. I loved reading everyone’s TT.

  • I’m excited for you one the jazzercize front- good for you. That sounds like such hard work and dedication. I would come to your class. :-) Even though I’m totally dyslexic when it comes to right and left extremities-oh! the OTHER right!- and by then I’m 13 steps behind…

    13. Thursday Thirteen-more hard work and dedication. That’s been a fun run and Leanne has been wonderful.

  • Oh gosh, I wish I could dance just so I could take one of your awesome classes.

  • I say: GOOD FOR YOU!! I bet you are the best damn instructor in your center. I’m in awe of ANYONE who gets up to instruct a class. I can barely follow!
