Scaredy Puss

Monday, October 16th 2006

Saturday, after soccer, a 3 hour pool indoctrination (don’t freaking ask) and stacking over a cord of firewood, we decided to pack up the fam and do something with our selves. We went to the corn maze.

cornmaze

We’ve been to this corn maze before but this time it was dark…and someone forgot to bring the flashlights.

We made it through the vague and twisty maze in about 20 minutes which was pretty good considering the kids were leading. Afterward, we sat by the bonfire and waited for the Haunted Hayride to arrive which was all my 7 year old could talk about. We sat and waited and shivered with a group of people all desperately trying to remain calm warm…like us.

At one point, a little boy stood up to tell a ghost story which made me almost wet my pants. He must have been no more than 5 years old and jumped from his mother’s lap with such gusto that you knew it was going to be interesting. He started it off with, “There was this little boy that liked to talk to the devil” and that was all it took. I lost it. I don’t know what was funnier - the look on that boy’s face or the fear in his mommy’s eyes. No one else was laughing so I hid my head behind my daughter who was luckily on my lap. He went on to tell a senseless kindergarten tale involving 666 and Satan. With each line I laughed harder and harder. I was in pure-gut-cramping-silent-howling contractions by the time his mother yanked him from the limelight and shushed him silly. She knew she was pegged as a Devil Momma by that point but there was nothing she could do. Poor woman.

Finally, our Haunted Hayride pulled up. We all hopped on and squished in like sardines. We sat all the way in the front by the tractor (the safest place, I thought).

I must tell you, I was not scared. I was there only to please my children. I was totally ready to be bored and yawn. Funny how a dark night in a corn field can turn you into a scaredy puss.

I realized it right away. The first or second haunted station we passed stood the girl from “The Ring”. That movie scared the ever-loving dootie out of me so when she reached in the wagon and grabbed my side I have no idea how loud I shrieked.

And the hits just kept on coming. Jason, Freddie, Scream man…you name it, it came after us. Some of them even climbed up on the wagon and tried to get in. The fear of the unknown - what was going to pop out of the corn field next- had my neck twisted in knots.

At one point, I think it was when the chainsaw guy attacked us in the middle of the deserted dairy farm, I must have grabbed both of my daughters and shoved my head down in between their arms. I remember the question “Now just who is the mother here?” bouncing around in my head as I looked up with my hands covering my face. Oh whoops. It’s me.

As we were walking to our car, I asked if anyone else’s throat was sore from screaming. I’m pretty sure they rolled their eyes at me but I was so busy rubbing my sore neck that I didn’t care.

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!

You love me. You really love me. Dontchya?

  • I don’t do scary. At all. Ever. I think even the corn maze in the dark would freak the ever-loving-bejeezus out of me. I’m not good at controlling fear that has no ‘control point’. i.e. if I can actively do something to control my fear, action I can take, etc. I’m OK, but otherwise, uh uh.

  • We had that experience last year at the corn maze/ haunted hay ride. It was awful, the girls were almost 3 and when we were on the hayride they actually LAUGHED while I almost peed on myself! The cornmaze took FORFREAKINGEVER! We had to buy flashlights, at $3 a pop, had to let my two little almost 3 year old girls decide wich path to take or else they were going to scream bloody murder, wich would have been acceptable considering thats what we were hearing anyway! They’ve already been after me to take them this year. I just dont know that I want to spend $11 per person (including little ones) to be scared to death by a freak wearing a silly costume LOL while my children laugh at me! shhhhhheeesh!

  • I don’t do scary, either. I was FREAKED OUT by The Blair Witch Project, The Grudge is the creepiest movie ever, and don’t even get me started on The Ring. Yuck. Props to you, MKay for doing all of that. I would have peed my pants.

  • D

thanks. See, I usually am scared spitless, but decided to suck it up this year and go on a haunted forest trek with my kids… but now? Never mind! You actually scared ME just by listening to you. Hey, how’s the Ghostie in your house? Making any fun appearances lately?

  • D-
Last night was the first night I have been here without my husband in months and months. The thought did cross my mind but at this point I’m like “Bring it”. This is my damn house and I have been overwhelmed with fixing it up since we moved in here. We deserve to live here peacefully. And so far we have been able to do just that.

There are weird noises and unexplained lights that go on and off but we just ignore it. Nothing spooky just odd.

    :o

  • That’s exactly why I don’t go on those things. I too would have been screaming.

You had fun though didn’t you. hehe :o

  • Sounds like fun!
#1 Son doesn’t do scary very well and it’s not worth the aggravation. Maybe next year….

  • no corn mazes for me.

i haven’t seen children of the corn in probably twenty years and STILL I’m off corn mazes for life.

  • 20 minutes?! Dang! That’s impressive! My hub & I did one of those mazes on our first date, and it took over 2 hours.

Ooooooh! I love haunted hayrides. The scarier the better — otherwise what’s the point?!

    Sounds like fun!!

    :pleasantry:

  • That little boy would have cracked me up too. How cool that the girl from “The Ring” was there!

  • the very thought of corn mazes scares the bejeepers out of me. been in one, never again. I think they had to helicopter me out, I was so freaked out. and yeah that’s nearly true!

  • LOL! Did you ever watch children of the corn???

  • Isn’t it great how our children bring out the children we once were…

  • I’m with IntersellarLass. I do not like scary, I do not like them you see .Not in movies, not in books, not in stories, not in haunted anything, just let me be! :scare:

  • Reminds me of the haunted house we went to in Baltimore which had monsters dripping with blood reach out and grab us. They took us through in groups of 6 and we moved as one - not wanting to become separated! I screamed until I couldn’t scream any more! How did the girls hold up?

  • OMG! I laughed so hard reading this. My son ran in and asked “what’s wrong mom?” This is the funniest story. I am POSITIVE I would do the exact same thing as you. I do not like people popping out at me. Especially in a dark corn maze!

  • I wouldn’t have made it to the hayride. The mze would have done me in. I am sure I wiuld wander lost in there forever. Wil someone come and lead you out before closing?

  • AM

Ha, ha, ha, ha! I can totally picture you with both of the girls along your side. I bet the youngest could hardly wait to do it again. I wish I could have been there to scream along with you. Did they have that creepy girl or little boy from The Grudge? That would be the worst for me.

  • See that is why I wont go on one either…LOL! I am way to chicken.

So how much teasing did you endore from your children?!

  • Oh I love those things! Can’t grow corn up here.

  • Note to self: Do not visit pumpkin farms at night.

  • I thought you were going to say that you were stuck in that maze for hours on end with your kids and hubby. In my world that would be scary.

  • I like scarey but have my limits. The haunted hayride sounds like a scream. Who says halloween is just for kids? You know how here on the farm I have my own private cemetery? I am building a faux cemetery in the front yard for halloween. I have made 30 headstones to display.

  • Thanks so much for the laugh! I can so see it now, ‘cuz that is how I would be….My duaghters don’t do scary, so I am safe from having to do the Haunted Hayride for a few years.

  • Wow it has been a long time since I’ve been here! Everything has changed! That maze sounds fun, and I don’t know if I would have been creeped out, or laughing at the boy with the story.

  • dude! i was running that haunted hayride! which ride were you on? also, i apologize if your wagon was late. the Leonard’s underestimated the ride times. we finally got a 2nd wagon running, though, to make up for it.

i’m really glad you guys enjoyed it, even if you were scared.
