We had wicked witch of the west thunder storms last night. Rain, hail, thunder, lightning, strong wind - the whole show. Here, on the mountain with all the windows surrounding us, the storm was even more surreal. I should have taken pictures. It was that amazing.
Around 9:30 pm we lost power. With flashlights in hand and candles burning, we sat and watched the storm through the living room windows. At times we felt as though we were in a washing machine or that the glass would break from the party going on outside. It was a mean one.
As the 5 (7, if you include the freaked out pups) of us were cuddled on the couches, sleep came fairly quick. A few hours later, we were awakened by the electricity returning and promptly shuttled everyone to bed - sore necks, tingly limbs and all. Not 5 minutes after, the power went out again and the kids were up.
And then things got really freaky…
The power flicked on and then off again - as if in a struggle to maintain itself. This happened a few times and then became quicker and quicker. What we all sat in wonder and beheld was our home behaving like a strobe light. A strobe light - encompassing almost every light in the house- for over 3 minutes straight. I kid you not.
And then it went out again as if exhausted from the performance.
My husband mumbled something about the power company not being up to snuff but I could tell he was freaked out a bit too. It was seriously as if someone were standing by the light switch turning it on and off - but in all the rooms - for freaking ever.
I had a headache from the light show and went straight to bed thanking God and my lucky stars that my husband was home when this happened. I can tell you for sure that I would not have slept here last night if things had been different.
How do you feel about thunder storms?

That’s pretty freaky. I’ll never forget the time I saw a flash of lighting come down right in my backyard. I was a teenager and my parents and I were standing on the porch watching the storm and a flash of bright light stunned the three of us. The noise was awful and I started shaking. I’ve been terrified of thunderstorms ever since.
To me that sounds SO COOL. I miss thunderstorms so much! I am going to go ahead and be the voice of logic and say it wasn’t the result of anything you saw in the Skeleton Key
But merely what happens when storms do their stormy stuff. It really does sound like it would have been fun…as long as the husband was there!
I miss thunderstorms. We hardly ever get them here. Do you remember when we were trying to make plant for the zoo and I was concerned about the rain?! That because we never get any in the summer and in the winter we always have a plan B for if it rains.
But goodness, I do love a good thunderstorm.
The lights definitely could have been a power problem…..unless you heard children laughing…..
That darn ghost…
But seriously, my hub would tell you that’s not good for the electrical system (the surges). He’d tell you to shut everything down at the breaker box. (Mr. Electrician that he is)
Love a thunderstorm!! As long as I’m inside.
I just love thunderstorms. I always feel safe, on grounds that if they’re going to get me they’re going to get me — and they haven’t yet.
I love thunderstorms, too. Especially when the power goes, and all that’s left is candle light or bedtime.
But I’ll admit I enjoy having the big safe arms of my honey to hide in during the worst ones. :lovestruck:
Um… thundestorms? Lightening? I run & hide. Not my cup o’ tea. No way, thank you! Currently we’re in Indiana, the state that makes movies like Twister look like Sesame Street play. So I freak out evertime a storm blows through. I’m obssessively watching the skies & listening for the tornado warning horns. Big honkin’ chicken, I am, I know. The last time we were having power flickers like you were describing, I was in the stairwell closet, trying to convince my two year old we were gonna play a game with the flashlight & no, Mommy was not scared.
I wanted to cry just reading that… I can’t stand storms! Of course I put on a brave front for the kids, but honestly? Big Scared Wuss!
I love a good storm.
Did it freak you out being in the house with no lights? (what with the ghosts and all)
You were lucky it didn’t damage anything electrical!
I can’t wait to see the movie they make about your new house.
Thank goodness your hubs was home, I can’t imagine how scary it would’ve been if he’d been gone. Yikes!
Ok, if you keep posting these freaky posts I don’t know if I can keep coming around! These stories scare me in a serious way. I am scared that the freak ghost that appears to live in your place reads your blog and will see me comments and come to my place. My only hope that is doesn’t want to go through the rigmarole at the border!
I’m sitting here in the middle of a thunder storm right now (except, Im inside, obviously, so I can use the laptop and all…
I tend to like them. Unless the power goes out! When I was a kid I loved it when we lost power because then we’d light candles at night and it was super fun. Now Im just annoyed because if it stays off long enough we’ll have to replace everything in the fridge, lol.
That strobe light thing with your lights is weird!
I was driving home during the ‘light show’ and it was amazing. I think the heavy rain must have come later with the second storm for us. But my electricity went out some time during the night and remained out in the morning as I struggled to get out to work. I was so glad to see it working last night as I dragged in from practice at midnight!
You should have an electrician out to talk about why all the lights flickered on/off - even those which you had not turned on! Maybe the breaker box shutdown is a good idea!
Thunder storms are beautiful to behold. Strobe lights with your electricity, not so good. I would get an electrician to look at that.
Maybe your ghost had a hand in the show. :scare:
I have to admit I love to watch thunderstorms, especiallly if I am some where I can watch it roll in. It sounds like your ghost likes disco
Ok.the house is most certainly haunted. Shall we start researching and sending books about how to live with your ghosts?
We had 3 hours of rolling thunder and lightening. We didn’t have any power issues (knock on wood). The electric company trucks were out the next morning - some down by you. I even saw 3 in one driveway! I’m thinking you were not the only family with power woes. Mr. Walter wouldn’t scare you like that. He’s a good guy.

We ended up with everyone in our bed that night…I ended up in the guest room. I felt like the storm was right on top of us! I usually love thunderstorms but even this one freaked me out. We lost power on and off for about three hours…serious strobe lighting..so in this case…power company and storm. You need to worry when there’s no storm and the same thing happens :scare:
I love a good thunderstorm…….but your story sounds to spooky for me. I sure am glad your husband was home too. I wouldn’t want you driving in that weather, even though it is suppose to be the safest place to be during the thunderstrom. xoox
I have a love-hate relationship with thunderstorms. Love the awesome display of Mother Nature’s power. Hate the possibility of damage/fire. In fact, they scare the crap out of me.
K, I probably would have gotten in bed and hid under the covers.
