Thirteen Things swirling around in MommaK’s head today…

1. I am exhausted. During the last 45 days we have made a room for and moved in a 16 year old son, thrown a top-secret-surprise birthday party for my husband, hosted Thanksgiving & Christmas, had a house full of visitors and a handful of parties to attend in between. Oh…and we all took turns being sick. It’s currently my turn.

2. January is my new favorite month. I am looking forward to refocusing, refreshing and reorganizing.

3. Today the girly-girls and I are meeting my best friend & her kids to exchange gifts. My friend, who currently lives in New York, and I have been best friends since the second grade. If you’re counting- that’s 25 years. Have you had a friend that long?

4. We started a new tradition this year called the Christmas Pyramid. I had the 5 kids (our 4 + 15 year old cousin) get themselves into a pyramid before opening presents - a proper one so I could take a picture. Simple, right? Aaaahahahahaha!

5. Our holiday was wonderful although I am starting to think I indirectly attract people that have terrible manners. Maybe I should pass out etiquette books as party favors. Better yet, maybe I’ll mail them in advance. Do you think that would be in poor taste ? What if I highlighted certain sections?

6. Next year we plan on hosting a huge Thanksgiving dinner in our big beautiful new home (fingers crossed). However, we are getting the hell out of town for Christmas. At this point, we’re thinking someplace tropical…

7. If everything went as planned, which I think it did, my cousin was reunited with her pup Maltsby earlier this week. If you know what I am talking about then you know what a huge deal this is to her.

8. I finally saw the Harry Potter movie this week. If I could, I would totally live in Hogwarts. Wouldn’t you?

9. I got an ipod for Christmas and now I have a new addiction. If you know me, you know I do not need another reason to be on the computer. (It’s so cute though with its little rubber pink skin!!) Now I just need to fill it..any suggestions?

10. I really do not enjoy New Year’s Eve. I don’t like to make plans or go out. It’s like the biggest night of the year for unmet expectations and drunk idiots. No thanks. I try to go to bed before midnight if I can help it. Now back in the day when MommaK was Ol’CrazyK…now that is a different story.

11. My house out here in the Ding-Dang woods has a septic system. Sometimes in the winter if the water trap runs dry, the house slowly begins to smell like shit. The first year I lived here I thought I was going mad. I kept walking around my house sniffing everywhere for almost 2 weeks before I figured it out. This morning I woke up to a familiar scent. Hmmmmm….time to fill the water trap.

12. My 10 year old received an application in the mail for a pageant yesterday. She wants to do it. I want to shred it.

13. I want to thank LadyBug Crossing & Running2Ks for nominating me for Best Mommy Blog and Leanne for nominating me for Best Overall Blog over at the BOB’s. I know there is no way I will win but was completely shocked & thriled to see my name! Thank you!!!! If you have a favorite blog you wish to nominate, you have until January 3rd to do so.

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!

You love me. You really love me. Dontchya?

  • Yep, I have a close friend I met in 1976 at Navy boot camp and we are STILL close. Wow. In May we’ll have our 30-year anniversary!!

  • I’m sorry you’re not feeling good! Blechy-poo in more ways than one, apparently! :indifferent:

January is my favorite month too. I hate the snow of it, but I like the middle of it.

I got an MP3 player too! It’s not pink, but I like it!

You should totally let her go for the pageant, mom! That sounds like fun!!

  • I love January! It’s a time for new beginnings. I like your 3 R’s (refocusing, refreshing and reorganizing)Lisa McMillan has been my best friend since first grade!
Have fun with your MP3 player!

  • We also have a septic tank. Is that what that smell is?
Does it also affect the way it works when it is cold?

My husband put a new line in the summer and it worked fine until it turned cold.

    Another reason to consider moving.

    My 13 are up.

Oh, on the tropical trip…just don’t forget anyone a la Home Alone!

  • If I had an iPod, it would be filled with 80’s music, but that’s just me!

  • I’m sorry you’re sick.

I feel like I can comment on every single thing on your list!

Our septic system does the SAME thing. *hurl* I was flipping out before we figured it out.

I have had my best friend since 1st grade - we’ve been friends for 29 years now. It’s so neat.

I hate New Year’s Eve too. Since the girls got older, we started a tradition of playing board games and eating junk. This year my husband has to work so I hate it even more.

My 13 are up. I hope you have a GREAT New Year’s!

  • My IPod would be full of 60’s - 90’s pop rock… stuff you can dance to while you’re working and blogging :P

    Here is mine… get better!

My bestest friend and I have been friends for almost TWENTY YEARS! OH man! we turn 40 this year.

    Ipod’s are the best!

We eat junk food and watch movies w. the kids. If we are inspired we talk about goals for 2006.

You might win. I love your blog.

    Many Blessings for 2006.

    My 13 are up

  • Hi MommaK,
I had fun reading your list and writing my own. Last year my husband and I went to St. Augusine Florida for Christmas for The Nights of Lights. It’s the oldest city in tghe country (Spanish-like) and the whole place is lit up and you can ride around in a horse and buggy at night. It was warm in the day enough for the beach, but not swimming.

I’m with you about New Year’s…we’re having dinner with the neighbors and we MIGHT make it to midnight.

    I’m early today…my 13 are up!

    Peace!

  • Feel better soon MommaK, I know I’m so glad the holiday season is over. It does feel like a time to refresh and renew. Here’s to good times in 2006!

  • AM

    Shred the pageant papers!

January is the best month. And I am not being biased because of my birthday. :winking:

  • Glad you survived your Christmas, try Christmas in NYC (just don’t go during a transit strike!) Congrats on your nominations. I too loved your 3 R’s. Happy New Year. Lazy Daisy

  • Congrats on your iPod!!!! I think you should fill it with podcasts …. the reality shows ones are the best. Look for the one called Reality Fan Forum, they interviewed Coby from Survivor in October.

  • Oh goodness! I hope you feel better soon! You’ve had an incredibly hectic couple of months.

I have a friend whom I’ve known since kindergarten (1970 - yes I’m old). We don’t see each other often anymore, but it feels like family when we do — we pick up right where we left off! It’s a special connection.

How wonderful about Meredith’s doggy! Maybe she’ll guest post here sometime?? (I’m assuming she’s reading this! That would be so cool!!)

Take care of yourself & have a restful New Year’s!!

My list for today is up too…

  • Hello MommaK!

I like your list! I’m happy you finally watched Harry Potter. I loved that movie! I watched it 4 times here! Certified HP addict. :yahoo:

I hope you’ll feel better soon

  • Happy Thursday 13!

You know, I would LOVE to hear the encounters with rudeness you have had over Christmas. What sort of rude behavior from family/friends did you have? I’ll bet you could make a blog entry out of it.

Good grief it sounds like you’ve had a busy time since Thanksgiving. I’ll bet you’re glad the holidays are over!

    My 13 are up!

  • Hi MommaK… I’m speed-reading my way thru Leanne’s TT13 partners. Wow…sounds like you had a busy busy season. Is that an understatement? Hope you feel better soon…and that you enjoyed your lunch with your best friend.

  • I don’t have any friends from childhood, but my best friend and I met when I was 20 and she was 22, and we’re both staring 50 pretty hard in the face. I treasure her more every year.

    Here’s my 13.

  • 1-2. I am too.
    3. Have a wonderful time!
    4. I always end up on bottom.
    5. Let’s write our own booklet to send out.
    6. I hope you find the most beautiful and perfect home.
    7. I miss her.
    8. No, I like my house.
    9. How much music have you put on it?
    10. Me either.
    11. The dreaded septic system. We had gremlins just before Christmas. No fun.
    12. Oh, tough one!!
    13. They beat me to it!!!

    Mine is up! :-)

  • I always love your Thursday Thirteens and this time, I decided to actually participate! Yup, it’s on my blog..come see.

  • I hope you are feeling better soon…. its no fun not feeling well.

January is my favourite month (its my birthday month), but I suppose I am a slight bit biased.

Happy New your and I wish you and your family the best in 2006!! :yahoo:

    My TT is up.

  • You’ve been sick so much. Get better missy! Mine are up.

  • D

Hope that ‘not feeling well’ doesn’t put a damper on your time shopping… but thinking of a sneaky way to publish those guest-etiquette books might cheer you up! See ya later at my 13?

  • Great list! My hubs and I were just talking about going on a vacation over Christmas next year. We just need to figure out a way to haul all of the gifts with us!

  • Love that Christmas pyramid idea!

Trying to Catch Up: Thursday Thirteen

  • You rock, MommaK. Holy moly, number 1 made me sleeping. And the Christmas pyramid sounds like a great idea!

  • my best friend and i have been friends since 1st grade. we’re on 20 years right now. isn’t it awsome haven’t a friend that long?

    my 13

  • Rest up! You’ve had a rough time!

    I love Hogwarts, too!

    Mine’s up: http://jenanddavin.blogspot.com/

  • Did you put an offer in on a house?!!! Tell me all about it.

Sounds like you had a great Christmas! January is always my favorite month. Love getting all clean and routine conscioius after the messy holidays.

  • Congrats on the BOB award nominations - - I’ll surely vote for ya! :yahoo:

I love January too - - there’s just something about the first month of the year that is fresh and new and hopeful.

    Happy New Year! :sing:

  • I want to know more about the bad manners. Come on, girl, dish!!

  • I don’t go out on NYE as a rule, either. I don’t care to fight the amateur drunks (those who drink once a year). Or the professional drunks, for that matter. I’ll stay home, or if I go to friends it’s only if they want everyone to stay the night. I really don’t like to be on the roads that night at all.

  • No wonder you are sick considering the stress you have been under! Hurray for January! I never feel depressed after Christmas - usually very relieved!!
A 2006 Christmas AWAY vacation is a great idea - maybe I’ll take off too! Hope you had a great day with AH and family! It was a wicked day to drive!

  • My Thirteen are up!!

  • I’m exhausted just from reading your blog. hehe

  • Happy Thursday! I’m looking forward to January too

  • My Thirteen are Up. I’m so with you on the Christmas Vacation vacation! Hope you’re feeling better

  • Oh my it has been awhile since I have been out and about visiting blogs ..Your new winter look is totally adorable … Here is wishing you a very awesome 2006 :yahoo: :yahoo:

  • Sorry you’re feeling icky–hope it’s over soon. I’ve had my best friend for 33 years–we met our freshman year in high school.

  • Oh yes, I would so live in Hogwarts! I’ve seen the HP movies so many times its not even funny. Each viewing is like a little escape for me.

I hope you feel better. I’m just getting over a nasty cold myself, no fun!

  • 2. January is my new favorite month. I am looking forward to refocusing, refreshing and reorganizing.

    Amen!

  • You have 4 kids? I thought you only had two daughters. And you’re moving to a big new house, but I’ve not seen any details of the new house and how this came about… did I miss when you wrote about it, or is this yet to come? No more life in the ding dang woods?

I would so be exhausted too, if this were my list! What am I saying. I AM exhausted.

And I agree, nothing fancy for New Years Eve. We’re just going to the neigbor’s, and likely home WELL before midnight.

  • Speak Up. You Know You Wanna.
