A Boast Post

Wednesday, October 5th 2005

I’ve previously mentioned a need for my own brand of aerobic etiquette. I do not enjoy substitute instructors nor do I enjoy being touched by them. I need my space and I am not afraid to insist upon it. This much we know.

Yesterday I walked into my jazzercise class and began chatting to a few of the ladies. We were laughing, putting on our shoes and various support devices when I saw Her. Little Miss Blonde standing square in my spot in the front row. I had never laid eyes on her before so I knew she was new. I didn’t want to be rude so I nicely (yeah right) took a spot behind her.

I figured Miss Blonde must know what she is doing if she is going to stand in the very front row. Well, as it turns out, she had no clue. When we went left, she went right. She looked like she was trying to turn every dance move into a jerky cheerleading routine. In fact, at one point I was sure she was going to throw her back out by the way she was flailing her arms overhead.

RAH!

I just don’t get it. When you are new to a dance/aerobics class, you take a place in the back. This is not only because you don’t want to embarrass yourself by not knowing the moves, but also because people that are unable to see the instructor look at the person in front of them to get their cues. If you don’t know the routines and are in the front, you end up throwing many other people off in your wake.

All of this is running through my head as I am watching her hyper-extended her shoulder blades with some sort of arm chopping motion that is supposed to be graceful. Then a teeny-tiny-little voice in my head said…“You’re such a damn show off. You’re never happy unless you’re in that front row and you think people are watching you.

Shhhh! Be quiet little voice! Nobody asked you!

Okay, Okay… Maybe the voice is right. Okay, it is…I mean, I am. I can admit it. I am a show-off in jazzercise. I’m a Leo. What can I say? Does that make me a bad person?

Your turn:

Where are you a show-off? Don’t be shy…
Tell us where you shine, gaudy or not.

You love me. You really love me.

  • I think I am best at entertaining. Steven says I am a top notch hostess. I also am an excellent public speaker when the topic is one I am passionate about.

    I am a Leo, too.

  • hmmm… i know i’m a show-off somewhere but i can’t pinpoint it now. back in high school, i used to be the first in volunteering for performances and stuff.

i’m a Libra so i try to keep things in harmony… playing fair and all… so i do tend to share the limelight. hehe.

  • I am more of a blend into the background kinda person.

  • I could always suck down a beer bong faster than any guy I knew in high school and college!

Now I mostly shine with my sarcastic wit and my ability to multi-task!

  • I don’t have many opportunities to shine anymore so I feel more rusty than anything! I shined a lot in my younger years in business.

  • I am a cancer, so, being shy, there are not many places where I shine. I was in ballet for ten years when I was a little girl, but now I would never even think about joining a dance class, let alone putting myself in the front row (I think you have to be a Leo to do this). Where do I shine? I have always been a good photographer. Our apartment is draped in framed pictures I’ve taken. I guess that makes me a show-off.

  • My daughter is a Leo, and a damn good one. She never passes a mirror or a window where she doesn’t check herself out (and smile).

I’m a Scorpio, and a damn good one. I never miss an opportunity to point out anything or anyone that doesn’t adhere to MY standards.

  • HA HA HA! I loved that Melvin post! You crack me up! Why don’t you just teach the class, then you could be right in the front every day!

    Let’s see…where do I shine? Poker!

  • I say if you got it, flaunt it! :o)
    *hugs*

  • I may spell numerous word wrong here so don’t laugh too hard.

I’m a Sagitarius and don’t know that that says about me really.

I show off with my intelligence when I think I’m being intelligent and then think about it later and realize that I was a big goof and a very wrong goof at that.

  • I would be in the back, because I dance like Baby Bop.

Where do I shine? I think I shine as a mother, and I probably show off about it all over my blog.

So, I’m cringing right now as I write this.

  • I can’t say, and NO, I don’t show it off, really, heh-heh.

  • i’m a capricorn, don’t really know what that means though, but i don’t think i’m a show off, not that i’m aware of anyway. i’m usually just doing my own thing, doesn’t really matter whether anyone notices or not.

  • I’m a big show off if I get a guestion right in one of those pub quizzes.

  • When I play Trivial Pursuit, I’m a HUGE, obnoxious show-off!

Hey, everyone in the Jazzercise class should imitate that chick…maybe she’d get the picture!!

  • I’m definitely a date night show off. I like to spend a lot of time getting ready when Hubs and I go out, then I enjoy surreptitiously watching people watching us.

It’s a perfect antidote to mommying all week in a slobber-stained t-shirt and jeans.

  • I am kinda with Lucinda. I love showing off how much my husband lusts for me… it cracks me up!

  • I only show off when I know I’m good at something…I’m a damn good teacher ;0) I do, however, suck at Jazzercise…I will NEVER stand in your spot!

  • Sherry

I can’t think of anything I want to show off on. But if you are good at something, by all means show off.
I was trying to put myself in THE BLONDE’S place and I think I would go up in the front too….to learn quicker, not to be a dork and do it wrong.
I also am putting myself in YOUR place….I think I would have said something…like this is my spot..I have been coming here for years, in nice way or what ever way you like.

  • Sherry

I just read the comments….. I am a SCORPIO and I know what Dena means and I think Interstellar has the right idea….become the instructor. And I sound like J & J Moms other then the spot where I would stand.

  • I show off when I’m in a karaoke bar. I’m not a superstar, just tastefully talented! :o)

  • I don’t have a thing that I show off well not that I don’t want recognition for things. If I had my druthers I’d be noticed for my writing but I’m not comfortable showcasing it… I have always admired the performer in you. I wish it didn’t make me want to die when all eyes are on me.

  • I think I’m a shy show off!

  • Oh hell, I’m so damn good at everything that I can’t choose.

    Okay, not really.

  • I’m a Sagitarrean, so I don’t care if anybody looks or not. :p

Okay, I’m a dance snob. I will sit all night if there’s no one good enough to dance with (back when I used to go out, that is). If there’s a good follower in the room, I like to get in the middle of the floor and cut a rug.

Yeah, I can be competitive about some things…

  • Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. Cheers! Sandra. R.

  • Talk to me, Goose.
