The Last Weekend of the Summer

Monday, August 29th 2005

What a lovely last weekend we had!

Saturday my sister came for dinner and spent the night. I made Pesto Chicken, baby red potatoes and a huge salad. My sister loved my cooking and even asked for seconds. This made me feel so good because I am not always that successful in the kitchen. After dinner we played Taboo with the girls until they were ready for bed and then we stayed up talking, crying and laughing until all hours of the morning. It was a great visit.

Sunday I took the girls to the park to roller skate. All three of us skated until our feet hurt or as my 6 year old said, “Mommy, my foot has a headache…”. Once we got home it was time to get the book bags & supplies labeled and ready for school. After dinner the girls wanted to have their nails done, so we did that too.

Before they went to bed I read my youngest a few books. One of which was this one:

I could not get over how perfect this book was for my daughter. My 6 year old looks very much like the girl on the cover and has a male first grade teacher just like the girl in the book. It was very sweet.

This morning my 6 year old asked when Daddy would be home. He has been in Europe for the last week. I told her that he would be here by dinner time and is very excited to hear about how the first day of school went. She looked at me and said,
“I wonder what he’ll bring me back from Hamsterdam…”.
It was so funny that I did not even correct her.

As I waved goodbye to my 5th grader and my 1st grader on the bus this morning, I felt calm and satisfied. They both had a great summer and were happy and eager to return to school.

Ahhh, life is good.

What did you do on your last weekend of summer?

If you really love me, feed me in your reader!

You love me. You really love me. Dontchya?

  • I was stuck at that darn wedding all weekend. I did go to my best bud Nadine’s house for her “candle show”

  • What a sweet post. I love hearing about your kids.

  • I love the first day of school! My kids never seem to be as excited about school after that particular day (which was last week for us).

Now what will you do with a few hours ALL TO YOURSELF?

  • Sherry

Oh what a cute post!! I love hearing about your girls too and your sister.

I camped out this past weekend and got back just in time….it is rainning outside. I had such a fun time getting away and having a camp fire at night. I will miss the summer. I also MISS getting my kids ready for school. Those days have been long gone….boy does time FLY!

  • I love hearing about the little day to day things that go on over there. I don’t feel like I’m missing as much this way, thank you!
My last weekend before school was very nice as well. I bonded with new friends and started work.

  • Hey! I’m putting a recipe on my recipe blog today in honor of you- It’s one of those that’ll convince people you’re a great cook- They’ll have no idea how easy it is!

The weekend before school started, we were out of town at a soccer tournament. I spent most of the weekend in a hotel room with Baby because it was so hot outside and she LOVED the all-day one-on-one attention she got from me. We had a great time. It made me think it would be nice to take a just-the-two-of-us hotel vacation every so often and watch movies and order room service and just hang out together with no distractions.

Congrats on getting through the summer!!

  • You made me laugh and cry in only a matter of lines!

You will need to let me know how grade one went. My son starts grade one on Sept 6 but only for 2 hours. Sept 7 is the real first day! I just wanna cry!

  • That’s so cute about Hamsterdam. LOL! I love it when kids say cute stuff like that.

  • OMG! i want that book! LOL! i have a first-grader starting school on thursday…

WAAAAHHH!!! where did the time go?!

  • My feet had a headache too… went to a wedding over the weekend and dance a lot. Mmmmm, pesto chicken sounds great. Wish I could cook. Hope the first day of school goes well.

  • I love Taboo! That’s a great game!

    Hamsterdam? HA HA HA! ROFLMAO!

  • Hamsterdam!! I love it. She sounds so similar to my Gracie at times. LOL Watching little girls grow up is an amazing thing, huh?

  • Ah, Oregon is in the sanity zone: We don’t start school until September. August is for vacations.

  • Yep, here in Oregon they probably only go to school a total of 3 months, I swear!

I have been putting in my yard for the last month. We finished up the fence on one side, made another flowerbed and actually put some flowers in it in hopes they come back in the spring and now we are wall-ing in our carport so it’s more like a small garage.
    The fun never stops!

  • A delightful post. I wonder what that game of ‘Taboo’ was like!

  • My last week of summer? Oh, I can’t believe it’s already over. I’ve been doing the same thing all summer - trying to sell my house and building a new one.

  • Oh yeah, Michele sent me.

  • Hamsterdam lol! That’s so cute!

I used to play Taboo with my Japanese students (I VERY informally taught english to them).

Oh, I had the most wonderful weekend! All fun, no work, and even a day at the beach. Sigh…

  • Our last weekend of summer was a couple of weeks ago. We spent it at Six Flags over Texas. School started on August 15th here!

  • What a wonderful post. Takes me back to when my kids were that young. I love that Hamsterdam comment. HA!

  • i used to love it when my kids mixed up words like that, i never corrected them either, they figure it out soon enough.
we had a beautiful weekend here, i managed to keep myself busy somehow.

  • What a great post MommaK. I have 1 kid starting school tomorrow and the other 2 on Thursday. This will be the last “first day” of school for my # 1 who is a Senior. *sniff* Time just flies on and on.
    Have a good evening honey.

  • I took a last minute vacation. I am glad your hubby is home and the kids are back in school. Everything sounds perfect!

  • I can’t believe the little one is a FIRST grader. You are one hot momma with those big kiddos! Any requests from Japan?

  • As you can see by the time what MY first day was like ;0) How did Daughter #2 like her “man” ? DIg that 4 day a week homework schedule huh? I think they will be pretty damn busy! J’man is doing much better..inner ear infection. Back to school tomorrow!

  • Oh..btw the Hamsterdam comment made me hurt myself I laughed so hard!!

  • Aww. What a nice last weekend before school. I took Sophie to college on Saturday, and spent Sunday sitting on my porch doing teacher work.

  • Sweet, what a good Mommy you are!

  • I went to Colorado!

  • Hamsterdam!
    A foot with a headache!
    Awwww, what sweet, sweet post.
I love Taboo and I must say I’m really good at it because I can think quickly under pressure and I talk very very fast!
Sounds like you had a lovely weekend indeed, MommaK. We attended my niece’s 7th birthday party, which was a swim-party in 105 degree heat. Sean and I also went to see Dave Matthews Band live. It was a great show.
Our kids are now into their THIRD week of school here, so our summer officially came to an end much before yours. (But I wish someone would tell the heat that summer is over!)
I love reading about you and your beautiful family.

  • How sweet…I am dreading the first day of kindergarten…I am going to be a wreck I just know it! I am away from her twice a week which is a nice break to collect mommy time but I really miss her and I race over to pick her up at the end of the day! Hope the school year goes well..TTYL

  • Ann Marie
